Resolving the Challenges of Power Plant Cycling

Factors such as the increased use of intermittent power generation sources (e.g. renewables) create challenges for baseload power plants resulting from flexible operations. Minimizing equipment damage and assessing the true costs of cycling is more important than ever. This workshop is designed to address these key issues and assist companies in planning for the future.

Who Should Attend?
Asset owners, service providers and original equipment manufacturers of power plant equipment, specifically leadership and individuals responsible for plant operations, maintenance, engineering and financial management.

ASME - Resolving the Challenges of Power Plant Cycling Course Schedule & Details:

Monday, December 3, 2018 | 8:00AM - 6:00PM

8:00AM – 8:30AM | Continental Breakfast

8:30AM – 12:00PM | Plant Maintenance Panel
(includes a 30-minute break)

Moderator: Brian Micklos, Global Product Manager, Power Systems Manufacturing (Ansaldo Energia Group)

Mike Caravaggio, Senior Program Manager, EPRI
Pamela Hamblin, Director, Asset Management Programs, Thielsch Engineering
John Mellers, Fellow Engineer, Steam Turbine Engineering, Siemens Energy Inc.
Darryl Taylor, Chief Technology Officer, Vogt
Brian Vitalis, Sr. Principal Engineer - Boiler Performance, Riley Power Inc.

Additional wear on plant components results in increased maintenance costs. Speakers will discuss impacts on equipment and best practices for how to mitigate it.

  • Understanding the damage mechanisms impacting the material integrity of critical components
  • Effect of cycling on thick wall components, particularly those that are already service aged
  • Mitigating the impacts to: boiler and auxiliaries, HRSGs, steam turbines, balance of plant equipment and pollution control equipment
  • Additional inspections needed to monitor damage progression
  • Design modifications to mitigate cycling impact

12:00PM – 1:00PM | Lunch Provided

1:00PM – 3:00PM | Plant Operations Panel

Moderator: Tony Salvarezza, General Manager Regional Services Florida, Duke Energy

Marc Lemmons, Steam Generator Specialist, Sargent and Lundy
Stéphane Velut, Industry Director – Energy & Process, Modelon
Brian Vitalis, Senior Principal Engineer - Boiler Performance, Riley Power Inc.

The panel will address operational impacts of plant cycling and flexible operations including:

  • Higher unit turndown during low demand, turning down below the technical limit, whether improved monitoring allows a unit to be turned down lower, other concerns (flame stability, corrosion, thermal and mechanical stresses, etc.)
  • Impact when operating below design low load limit
  • Improving ramp rates
  • Sliding pressure vs. constant pressure operations
  • Lay-up practices, including which is best for the type of cycling
  • Start-up and plant optimization

3:00PM – 3:15PM| Break

3:15PM – 5:00PM| Plant Economics Panel

Moderator: Tony Salvarezza, General Manager Regional Services Florida, Duke Energy

Johnny Bofilios, Director, Business Development, Copperleaf Technologies
Doug Hilleman, Principal Engineer, Intertek
Frank Michell, Manager Applications Engineering & Balance of Plant Mechanical Equipment, American Electric Power

Flexible operations can have a significant impact on plant economics. During this session, presenters will share their expertise and lessons learned about keeping assets profitable in a changing energy market:

  • Asset preservation vs. capital investment/replacement - Which makes sense?
  • How does cycling affect O&M budget,
  • Cost and availability of fuel and other consumables
  • Optimizing equipment maintenance and outage cycles
  • Economics of unintended consequences - What costs are operators not aware of?
  • How much capital investment to put into a plant. Is more investment warranted?
  • Online monitoring and condition-based operations decisions - Using strain gauges, temperature indication and other measurements to utilize active models to provide real-time feedback regarding the effect of given operations on life expectancy and economics of the asset.
  • Challenges of meeting RTO expectations

5:00PM - 6:00PM | Networking Reception
